The Dispute of the Six-Lineage Sages on the Supreme and Their Journey to Brahmā at Meru
brahmovāca | ṛṣayo he mahābhāgā mahāsattvā mahaujasaḥ | kimarthaṃ sahitāssarve yūyamatra samāgatāḥ
Brahma
Tattva Level: pashu
Role: teaching
It frames a sacred inquiry: enlightened sages gather with a shared purpose, and Brahmā’s question opens the doorway for transmission of Shaiva knowledge that leads toward liberation (moksha) under the grace of Pati (Śiva).
Though the verse itself is introductory, such gatherings typically precede instruction on Saguna worship (Linga, mantra, ritual) that steadies the mind and prepares the seeker to grasp the higher, subtle truth of Śiva beyond limitations.
The practical takeaway is “satsaṅga and śravaṇa” (holy assembly and listening). In Shaiva practice this is commonly supported by japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and disciplined purity (bhasma/rudrāksha) when the teaching unfolds.
