शिवतत्त्ववर्णनम् (Śiva-tattva-varṇana) — “Description/Exposition of the Principle of Śiva”
Vishnu
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: teaching
It frames the core Shaiva path: the soul seeks the Lord’s grace by asking the right questions—how to please Shiva, how to worship, and how to meditate—showing that liberation depends on disciplined devotion culminating in Shiva’s gracious responsiveness.
The verse is a direct request for method: in the Shiva Purana, such instruction typically leads to saguna-upāsanā—worship of Shiva as approachable (often via the Liṅga), supported by mantra, offerings, and contemplative dhyāna that reveals Shiva’s presence.
This shloka itself asks for the procedure; it points toward learning Shiva-pūjā and dhyāna as taught in the Rudra Saṃhitā—commonly involving mantra-japa (notably the Pañcākṣarī), internal visualization, and devotion that invokes Shiva’s grace.
