The Question of Whom to Serve (Sevā) for the Removal of Suffering
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Sthala Purana: Not site-specific; it completes the practical ladder: sat-saṅga → guru → mantra-ādi pūjana → bhakti → jñāna.
Significance: General: frames mantra and pūjā as guru-given means that ripen into bhakti and culminate in liberating knowledge by Śiva’s grace.
Type: panchakshara
Role: teaching
Offering: dhupa
It presents a Shaiva path of inner ascent: holy association leads to the true Guru; the Guru establishes mantra-worship; worship matures into bhakti; and bhakti ripens into liberating jñāna—knowledge that reveals Shiva as the supreme Pati and frees the bound soul.
“Mantrādi pūjanam” naturally includes Saguna worship—such as Linga-pūjā with Shiva-mantras—taught by the Guru. Through disciplined external worship, devotion deepens and culminates in inner realization of Shiva’s true nature.
It implies receiving mantra-dīkṣā and guidance from the Guru, then practicing mantra-japa and pūjā regularly (e.g., Panchākṣarī japa with Linga worship); sustained worship cultivates bhakti, which clarifies the mind for spiritual knowledge.
