Concise Teaching on Liṅga Worship / Śiva-arcana-vidhi
भवद्भिः पृच्छयते तद्वत्तथा व्यासेन वै पुरा । पृष्टं सनत्कुमाराय तच्छ्रुतं ह्युपमन्युना
bhavadbhiḥ pṛcchayate tadvattathā vyāsena vai purā | pṛṣṭaṃ sanatkumārāya tacchrutaṃ hyupamanyunā
Was ihr fragt, ist eben dasselbe, was Vyāsa einst in alter Zeit fragte. Er befragte Sanatkumāra, und diese Lehre wurde wahrlich von Upamanyu gehört und bewahrt.

Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Sthala Purana: Not a jyotirliṅga origin; it is a paramparā-śloka mapping the lineage of the Śivārcana teaching: Vyāsa → Sanatkumāra → Upamanyu → (later) Sūta → Naimiṣāraṇya sages.
Significance: Highlights the sanctity of lineage (guru-śiṣya-paramparā) as the conduit of efficacious ritual knowledge; receiving arcana-vidhi through authentic transmission is itself a form of anugraha.
Role: teaching
It emphasizes the sanctity of guru-paramparā: Shaiva knowledge is not mere theory but an authenticated transmission, ensuring that teachings leading toward Shiva-realization (moksha) remain pure and reliable.
By stressing an authorized lineage of instruction, it implies that correct Linga-worship and Saguna Shiva upāsanā should be learned from trustworthy teachers and scripture, not invented or practiced casually.
The practical takeaway is śravaṇa (reverent listening) to Shaiva teachings from a competent guru—preparing one for disciplined practice such as japa of the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and other Shiva Purana-approved observances.
