Dakṣa’s Appeal to Viṣṇu and the Teaching on Disrespect to Śiva
Suta Goswami (narrating the Shiva Purana to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Rudra
Cosmic Event: Naraka-daṇḍa for śiva-droha (karmic retribution)
The verse warns that Śiva-droha (betrayal or malicious opposition to Śiva and His devotees) is a grave form of bondage (pāśa) that ripens into intense suffering under the law of dharma; it urges the soul (paśu) to turn from hatred and disrespect to devotion and surrender to Pati (Śiva).
Linga-worship represents reverence to Saguna Śiva as the accessible form of the Supreme; this verse underscores that contempt for Śiva (and by extension His Linga, worship, and devotees) is spiritually destructive, while honoring Śiva through proper worship aligns one with dharma and grace.
Adopt daily Panchakshara japa ("Om Namaḥ Śivāya") with repentance for offenses, perform Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) with remembrance of Śiva, and cultivate non-hatred toward Śiva-bhaktas—these are practical correctives to Śiva-aparādha.
