विष्णोर्दर्शनं स्तुतिश्च

Viṣṇu’s Manifestation and Brahmā’s Hymn

शंकरं सुरसामान्यं मत्वा द्रोहं करोषि हि । सुबुद्धिर्विगता तेद्याविर्भूता कुमतिस्तथा

śaṃkaraṃ surasāmānyaṃ matvā drohaṃ karoṣi hi | subuddhirvigatā tedyāvirbhūtā kumatistathā

Indem du Śaṅkara nur für einen gewöhnlichen Gott unter den Devas hältst, begehst du wahrlich eine Verfehlung. Heute ist dir die rechte Einsicht entschwunden, und eine verkehrte, irreführende Vorstellung ist in dir aufgestiegen.

The verse warns that reducing Śiva to the level of an ordinary deva is a fall from right discernment; such misapprehension becomes an offence (aparādha) that blocks devotion and liberation, since Śiva is Pati—the supreme Lord and inner ruler.

Liṅga and Saguna-Śiva worship train the devotee to see Śiva as the supreme, all-pervading reality manifesting graciously in an accessible form; the verse rejects a merely comparative ‘one god among many’ attitude that undermines śraddhā in Śiva’s lordship.
