Girijā’s Austerity-Test and the Summoning of the Seven Sages
maheśvara uvāca | he saptamunayastātāśśṛṇutāraṃ vaco mama | asmaddhitakarā yūyaṃ sarvajñānavicakṣaṇāḥ
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Role: teaching
The verse highlights śravaṇa (reverent listening) and viveka (discernment): Shiva calls the sages wise and welfare-minded, establishing that divine instruction is received best by those devoted to the good and capable of right judgment.
As Saguna Shiva (Maheśvara) speaks directly, the verse models personal devotion where the Lord guides worthy seekers. Such listening to Shiva’s words is itself a form of upāsanā that supports Linga-worship by grounding it in understanding and disciplined receptivity.
A clear takeaway is śravaṇa and manana: hear Shiva’s teachings attentively and reflect on them. Practically, this pairs well with daily japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and a brief seated contemplation on the meaning before or after worship.
