Episode of Obstacles to Gautama; Gaṇeśa’s Appearing Through Misguided Worship

It highlights that even correct spiritual counsel may be fruitless without śraddhā (receptive faith) and viveka (discernment). In Shaiva understanding, grace-bearing instruction must be inwardly accepted for it to transform the seeker.
The verse frames a narrative moment where instruction connected to Shaiva practice is offered but not received. In Linga/Saguna worship, outer acts (darśana, pūjā, pilgrimage) become effective when the mind consents—accepting the teaching and turning toward Shiva as Pati (the Lord).
The direct takeaway is cultivation of śraddhā and attentive listening (śravaṇa) before practice—approaching Shiva worship, mantra-japa (such as the Panchākṣarī), or pilgrimage with humility and willingness to accept guidance.
