उत्तरदिग्देशस्थ-शिवलीङ्गमाहात्म्य
Māhātmya of Northern-Region Śiva-liṅgas
ऋषय ऊचुः । सूतसूत महाभाग धन्यस्त्वं शिवसक्तधीः । महाबलस्य लिंगस्य श्रावितेयं कथाद्भुता
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ | sūtasūta mahābhāga dhanyastvaṃ śivasaktadhīḥ | mahābalasya liṃgasya śrāviteyaṃ kathādbhutā
Die Weisen sprachen: „O Sūta, Sohn des Sūta, o höchst Begnadeter! Gesegnet bist du, dessen Erkenntnis Śiva hingegeben ist. Du hast uns diese wunderbare Erzählung vom überaus machtvollen Liṅga hören lassen.“
The sages of Naimisharanya (Rishis) addressing Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
Sthala Purana: Transition to the next chapter: the ṛṣis praise Sūta as śiva-sakta-dhī and acknowledge having heard the wondrous kathā of Mahābala’s liṅga.
Significance: Models the ideal reception of māhātmya: श्रद्धा (faith) and gratitude toward the teacher, which in Śaiva Siddhānta supports śravaṇa as a preparatory limb toward Śiva’s grace.
Role: teaching
It praises śravaṇa (devout listening) of Śiva-kathā and honors the teacher who is śiva-sakta-dhī—one whose mind is fixed on Śiva—affirming that hearing the Liṅga’s glory is itself a purifying, grace-bearing act.
By calling the Liṅga “mahābala” (supremely powerful), the verse highlights the Liṅga as the accessible, worship-worthy form of Śiva (Saguna upāsanā) through which devotees approach the transcendent Pati and receive spiritual upliftment.
Regular listening/recitation of Śiva Purāṇa Liṅga-māhātmya (kathā-śravaṇa) as a devotional sādhana, ideally alongside simple Liṅga-pūjā with mantra-japa such as “Om Namaḥ Śivāya.”
