Indrajit’s Illusory Sita Episode and Hanuman’s Rebuke
ततःखडगेनमहताहत्वातामिन्द्रजित् स्वयम् ।हृष्टस्सरथमास्थायननाद च महास्वनम् ।।।।
tataḥ khaḍgena mahatā hatvā tām indrajit svayam | hṛṣṭaḥ sa ratham āsthāya nanāda ca mahāsvanam ||
Daraufhin freute sich Indrajit, nachdem er sie selbst mit seinem großen Schwert erschlagen hatte; er bestieg seinen Wagen und ließ einen gewaltigen Ruf erschallen.
Indrajith himself with his long sword killed her, then rejoiced, he ascended the chariot and roared in a loud tone.
The verse underscores a dharmic critique: exultation in cruelty (even staged) signals moral corruption; righteous action is not paired with delight in suffering.
Indrajit publicly celebrates to amplify the effect of the deception on the vānaras.
By contrast, dharma values compassion and restraint; Indrajit embodies the opposite—triumphalism rooted in harm and deception.
