Vibheeshana, having addressed Ravana in harsh language, reached Rama and Lakshmana in a short while.
While Vibhishana spoke the truth regarding Dharma and the return of Sita, it was perceived as harsh and offensive by Ravana, whose judgment was clouded by arrogance and Adharma.
The verse illustrates that when a hierarchy or elder (Ravana) persists in Adharma despite counsel, one's higher duty is to abandon that association and seek the side of Dharma (Rama).
