FAQs

It refers to the fourth life-stage (āśrama), commonly understood as saṃnyāsa—formal renunciation marked by detachment, simplicity, and freedom from personal desires.

They form a paired ideal of renunciation: inner non-attachment (niḥsaṃga) and outer non-accumulation or non-ownership (niṣparigraha), indicating both mental and practical simplicity.

It suggests a restrained, stable way of life—avoiding restless wandering for pleasure or gain—while maintaining minimal needs and a disciplined, community-adjacent presence without entanglement.
