Aruna (addressing Vinatā; then speaking to Kadrū)

Concept: False speech fractures dharma; oaths bind karma. Calling out untruth is itself a dharmic act when done to prevent injustice.

Application: Avoid wagers and promises rooted in ego; if an oath must be taken, let it be grounded in truth and accountability.

Primary Rasa: raudra

Secondary Rasa: vira

FAQs

It highlights the moral weight of speech: false words provoke a crisis that leads to vows and formal oaths, emphasizing accountability in dharma.

Vinatā and Kadrū are rival mothers in the cosmic genealogy narratives; Kadrū is explicitly called the mother of the Nāgas (serpents).

A vow (pratijñā) and an oath (śapatha) are not casual speech-acts; they bind the speaker ethically and socially, so truthfulness and restraint in speech are essential.
