Concept: Knowing each syllable’s presiding deity (pratyakṣara-devatā) is not mere scholarship; it is the key to mantra’s living presence and can culminate in Viṣṇu-sāyujya.

Application: In japa, add ‘meaningful attention’: learn the mantra’s structure, invoke its devatā-bhāva, and keep conduct (ācāra) consistent with the mantra’s purity.

Primary Rasa: shanta

FAQs

It refers to the traditional idea that each syllable (arṇa) of a mantra is associated with a presiding deity (devatā); understanding these associations is presented as a form of deeper mantra-knowledge.

It states that knowing the syllable-deities can lead to Viṣṇu-sāyujya (union with Viṣṇu), framing Gāyatrī-related knowledge within a Vaiṣṇava liberation goal.

The verse emphasizes disciplined, informed practice—suggesting that mantra-recitation is not merely mechanical but should be accompanied by understanding and reverence for its inner structure and meaning.
