Utpātas are extraordinary portents—unusual events in nature or society—understood in Purāṇic literature as signs indicating impending change, disruption, or a turning point in the narrative.
It suggests that the same class of omens can appear frightening or mild depending on their indication (nidarśana) and context—some warning of calamity, others signaling a shift that may not be wholly negative.
The verse encourages attentiveness and discernment: when instability appears, one should respond with steadiness, prayerful restraint, and dharmic action rather than panic—treating signs as prompts for inner and outer correction.
