Bhīṣma

Concept: Darśana of a mahā-tīrtha magnetizes sādhus and multiplies merit; sacred geography is a living field of grace.

Application: Seek holy company and visit (or mentally honor) tīrthas with humility; treat sacred places as opportunities for self-restraint, charity, and remembrance rather than tourism.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: tirtha

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"On the ghats of Puṣkara’s lotus-shaped lake, a radiant ‘mukha’ shrine-platform gleams as if the tīrtha itself has a face. A vast congregation of sages—matted hair, deer-skins, waterpots—arrives in waves, their eyes fixed on the sacred spot, while the air shimmers with mantra and incense.","primary_figures":["Bhīṣma (as narrator-figure in a side vignette)","Ṛṣis (a crore symbolically represented as a great multitude)","Tīrtha-devatā presence (subtle)"],"setting":"Puṣkara Lake ghats with steps, small shrines, banyan and peepal trees, distant Aravalli hills; ritual lamps and water offerings along the shore.","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["lotus pink","saffron gold","sandalwood beige","turquoise water","ash grey"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Puṣkara lakefront with a central mukha-darśana shrine rendered as a jeweled arch, sages in orderly rows offering añjali, gold leaf haloing the shrine and the water’s edge, rich crimson and emerald accents, ornate borders with lotus and conch motifs, traditional South Indian iconographic symmetry.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: lyrical Pushkar ghats with delicate linework, cool morning haze over turquoise water, sages arriving along winding steps, refined faces and soft textiles, Aravalli hills in pale blues and greens, subtle floral margins and rhythmic composition.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold black outlines, warm ochres and greens, stylized sages with expressive eyes, the mukha shrine as a sanctified mandala-like gateway, lamp-lit ghats, patterned water ripples, temple-wall aesthetic with traditional ornamental bands.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: Pushkar lake transformed into a lotus mandala, dense lotus motifs and floral borders, multitudes of sages as repeating devotional figures, deep indigo water with gold highlights, conch and chakra motifs subtly implying Viṣṇu’s tīrtha-presence."}

FAQs

It frames Puṣkara as exceptionally powerful: merely seeing its ‘mukha’ (the foremost sacred point) is said to draw vast numbers of sages, highlighting its fame and magnetism as a pilgrimage center.

Bhīṣma is speaking. He introduces the topic by saying he has heard the excellent māhātmya (glorification) of Puṣkara and Nandā and cites a traditional claim about sages gathering there.

The verse implies reverence for tīrthas and the value of darśana (sacred seeing): approaching holy places with faith and attentiveness is portrayed as spiritually significant and tradition-affirming.
