Sūta

Concept: Dharma teaching should be ‘samūlataḥ’—rooted in first principles; Vaiṣṇava leadership is measured by loka-hita (welfare of all worlds), not sectarian gain.

Application: Seek teachings with foundations, not slogans; measure spiritual maturity by service and benefit to others; cultivate attentive listening (śravaṇa) before acting.

Primary Rasa: vira

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: forest

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Sūta stands or sits slightly elevated, one hand raised in a teaching gesture, addressing Śaunaka and the circle of sages seated on kusa mats. The forest of Naimiṣa feels sanctified—smoke from a yajña curls upward as if carrying the discourse to the heavens.","primary_figures":["Sūta","Śaunaka","assembled sages (ṛṣis)"],"setting":"Naimiṣāraṇya sacrificial grove with fire altar, kusa seats, water pots, and manuscript bundles.","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["ochre","smoke white","forest green","maroon","soft gold"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Sūta with gold leaf halo addressing a semicircle of sages; ornate yajña-kuṇḍa with stylized flames; rich maroon and green drapery, embossed gold borders, traditional iconographic symmetry.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: wide hermitage clearing with delicate trees and distant river haze; sages in calm attentive poses; Sūta’s expressive hand gesture; cool natural palette and fine facial detailing.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines, rhythmic composition of seated sages; central Sūta with commanding gesture; warm reds/yellows/greens, temple-wall aesthetic with decorative bands.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: circular assembly of sages framed by lotus borders; peacocks at corners; deep blue ground with gold highlights; conch and chakra motifs subtly integrated to mark Vaiṣṇava identity."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"narrative","suggested_raga":"Desh","pace":"moderate-narrative","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["sacred fire crackle","group chanting undertone","forest birds","occasional bell"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: tvamagryo'si → tvam agryaḥ asi (visarga + a → o); sarvalokahite = sarva-loka-hite (compound).

FAQs

Sūta functions as a principal narrator who relays teachings and stories to assembled sages, framing the discourse as an authoritative transmission of Purāṇic knowledge.

By praising the listener as “foremost among the Vaiṣṇavas,” the verse highlights devotion to Viṣṇu as a defining spiritual excellence, linked with compassion and public welfare.

Spiritual leadership is portrayed as inseparable from sarva-loka-hita—active concern for the well-being of all—suggesting that devotion should express itself through beneficent conduct.
