Description of the Demons’ Austerities
Why the Gods Won
Concept: Power gained through harsh discipline, when yoked to conquest, becomes a catalyst for downfall; cosmic order resists egoic seizure.

Sandhi Resolution Notes:
He declares his intention to perform severe austerities (tapas) in order to gain power and seize control of the three worlds (trailokya).
It presents tapas as a source of power, but in Hiraṇyākṣa’s case the motive is conquest and domination, highlighting that austerity can be used toward unrighteous aims when driven by ego and ambition.
The verse cautions that power gained through discipline or spiritual practice is ethically shaped by intention; when pursued for control over others, it becomes a cause of disorder rather than liberation.
