Adhyaya 90 — The Slaying of Shumbha and the Reabsorption of the Goddesses into Ambika
This verse represents the pinnacle of Shakta Advaita (Non-duality). It illustrates that while the Divine Mother projects various forms (Matrikas) to fulfill cosmic functions, they are ultimately inseparable from Her. She is the Ekā (The One) without a second.
This narrative is embedded within the Manvantara section of the Markandeya Purana, specifically detailing the events that grant authority to the Eighth Manu, Savarni.
The demon Shumbha represents the ego which perceives duality and questions the Devi's strength by claiming she fights with the help of others. By absorbing the Shaktis, the Devi demonstrates that all power in the universe is a manifestation of her singular consciousness.
