Time-Reckoning and Mobilization Counsel

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dharma as fidelity to one’s vow and the seriousness of conditions attached to agreements. It also warns that greed (lobha) and delusion (moha) can distort judgment, so a qualified elder versed in dharma (Bhīṣma) should determine the correct application of the rule.

A concern is raised that Arjuna may have been revealed before the Pāṇḍavas’ incognito year was fully complete. If so, the penalty would be to repeat twelve years of forest exile. The speaker suggests possible causes—greed or confusion—and points to Bhīṣma as the authority to judge whether the thirteenth year is short, complete, or exceeded.
