नलस्य विवस्त्रीकरणं दमयन्ती-सहानुगमनं च
Nala’s Disrobing and Damayantī’s Companionship
एवमुक्तस्तु शक्रेण कलि: कोपसमन्वित: । देवानामन्त्रय तान् सर्वनिवाचेदं वचस्तदा,इन्द्रके ऐसा कहनेपर कलियुगको क्रोध चढ़ आया और उसी समय उसने उन सब देवताओंको सम्बोधित करके यह बात कही--
evam uktas tu śakreṇa kaliḥ kopasamanvitaḥ | devān āmantrya tān sarvān ivācedaṃ vacas tadā ||
So von Śakra (Indra) angesprochen, geriet Kali in Zorn. Da rief er alle Götter zusammen und sprach damals diese Worte:
बु॒हदश्व उवाच
The verse highlights a common ethical pattern: when confronted by legitimate correction (here, Indra’s words), a personification of unrighteousness (Kali) reacts with anger and seeks to influence others. It implicitly commends restraint and receptivity to dharmic counsel over reactive indignation.
Bṛhadaśva narrates that after Indra speaks to Kali, Kali becomes enraged. He then calls together the gods and begins to address them, setting up the next speech and the ensuing moral/cosmic dispute.
