Educational Q&A

The verse underscores how royal sovereignty, expressed through the Rājasūya, claims to encompass even distant and marginal peoples. It invites reflection on the dharmic limits of imperial ambition: ritual grandeur and ‘universal’ kingship depend on political submission, and thus carry ethical responsibility toward those drawn into that order.

Sañjaya is reciting a catalogue of peoples and kings associated with the great assembly around Yudhiṣṭhira’s Rājasūya. This line continues the list, naming northern and frontier groups (and even a legendary ‘women’s kingdom’) to emphasize the breadth of attendance/acknowledgment of the Pāṇḍavas’ rising power.
