अग्निर्यश्न शिवो नाम शक्तिपूजापरश्न सः | दुःखार्तानां च सर्वेषां शिवकृत् सततं शिव:,'शिव” नामसे प्रसिद्ध जो अग्नि हैं, वे शक्तिकी आराधनामें लगे रहते हैं। समस्त दुःखातुर मनुष्योंका सदा ही शिव (कल्याण) करते हैं, इसलिये उन्हें 'शिव” कहते हैं
agnir yaḥ śivo nāma śaktipūjāparaś ca saḥ | duḥkhārtānāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ śivakṛt satataṃ śivaḥ ||
Mārkaṇḍeya sprach: „Jenes Feuer, das unter dem Namen ‘Śiva’ berühmt ist, ist stets der Verehrung der Śakti hingegeben. Unablässig wirkt es Heil für alle, die vom Kummer bedrängt sind; darum heißt es ‘Śiva’—der Wohltätige.“
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse explains the etymological and ethical sense of the name ‘Śiva’: the divine is called Śiva because he continually brings welfare (śiva) to beings in distress, emphasizing compassion and beneficence as defining divine qualities.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing a form/aspect of Agni who is known as ‘Śiva’ and is devoted to Śakti-worship, highlighting his role as a constant benefactor of those suffering.
