न होतत् संयुगे कर्तुमपि शक्तः सुरेश्वर: (ध्रुवं धनंजय प्रीतस्त्वयि शक्र: पुरार्दन ।) सुरासुरैरवध्यं हि पुरमेतत् खगं महत्
na hotat saṁyuge kartum api śaktaḥ sureśvaraḥ (dhruvaṁ dhanaṁjaya prītas tvayi śakraḥ purārdana |) surāsurair avadhyaṁ hi puram etat khagaṁ mahat
„Selbst der Herr der Götter wäre nicht imstande, dies im Kampf zu vollbringen. Wahrlich, o Dhanañjaya, Śakra (Indra) ist dir gewogen, o Pūrārdana. Denn diese große fliegende Stadt ist in der Tat sowohl für Götter als auch für Asuras unverwundbar.“
अजुन उवाच
The verse highlights that extraordinary tasks in dharmic struggle require more than raw strength: they depend on rightful alignment, divine support, and the unique fitness of the chosen agent. Even a god’s power may be ineffective where a specific destiny and merit designate a particular hero.
Arjuna is being told that a certain feat in battle is beyond even the lord of the gods, and that Indra is certainly pleased with him. The speaker emphasizes the formidable nature of a great ‘flying city’—a fortress said to be invulnerable to both gods and demons—thereby magnifying the challenge and Arjuna’s exceptional role.
