Vaiśampāyana said: “For a kṣatriya, what higher righteous deed is there than this: to face the battle and either lay down one’s life or else conquer the enemy? Therefore, O scorcher of foes, let this one be slain while fighting us—or let us fall while fighting him.”

Educational Q&A

The verse articulates kṣatriya-dharma: the highest righteous conduct for a warrior is to meet battle head-on and accept either outcome—death in honorable combat or victory over the enemy—without shrinking from duty.

Vaiśampāyana frames a battle situation in which the fighters are urged to engage decisively: either the enemy will be killed while fighting them, or they will fall while fighting him—emphasizing courage and duty as the proper stance in the moment of combat.
