धृतराष्ट्रस्य बलाबलचिन्ता

Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Appraisal of Strength and Preference for Śama

(ईदृशेडभिनिविष्टस्य पृथिवीक्षयकारके । अधर्म्यें चायशस्ये वा कार्ये महति दारुणे ।। पाण्डवैर्विग्रहस्तात सर्वथा मे न रोचते ।। ) “तुम ऐसे कार्यके लिये दुराग्रह करते हो, जो समस्त भूमण्डलका विनाश करनेवाला है। यह अधर्मकारक तो है ही, अपयशकी भी वृद्धि करनेवाला है; इसके सिवा यह अत्यन्त क्रूरतापूर्ण कर्म है। तात! तुम्हारा पाण्डवोंके साथ युद्ध छेड़ना मुझे किसी भी तरह अच्छा नहीं लग रहा है। आत्मजेषु परं स्नेहं सर्वभूतानि कुर्वते । प्रियाणि चैषां कुर्वन्ति यथाशक्ति हितानि च,“संसारके समस्त प्राणी अपने पुत्रोंपर अत्यन्त स्नेह करते हैं तथा अपनी शक्तिके अनुसार इनका प्रिय एवं हितसाधन करते हैं

īdṛśe 'bhiniviṣṭasya pṛthivīkṣayakārake | adharmyeṃ cāyaśasye vā kārye mahati dāruṇe || pāṇḍavair vigrahas tāta sarvathā me na rocate || ātmajeṣu paraṃ snehaṃ sarvabhūtāni kurvate | priyāṇi caiṣāṃ kurvanti yathāśakti hitāni ca ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana sprach: „Mit solcher Verbohrtheit an einem Vorhaben festzuhalten, das Verderben über die ganze Erde brächte—eine Tat wider den Dharma, die Schande mehrt und von äußerster Grausamkeit ist—gefällt mir ganz und gar nicht. Mein Sohn, ich kann in keiner Weise gutheißen, dass du Feindseligkeiten gegen die Pāṇḍavas eröffnest. Denn alle Wesen in der Welt hegen die tiefste Liebe zu ihren eigenen Söhnen und bemühen sich, nach ihrem Vermögen, das zu tun, was ihnen angenehm und zuträglich ist.“
