Sanatsujāta-Āhvāna (Summoning Sanatsujāta) — Vidura’s Invocation and Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Doubt

तमो<प्रकाशो भूतानां नरको<यं प्रदृश्यते । मुहान्त इव धावन्ति गच्छन्त: श्वभ्रवत्‌ सुखम्‌

tamo 'prakāśo bhūtānāṁ narako 'yaṁ pradṛśyate | muhānta iva dhāvanti gacchantaḥ śvabhravat sukham |

Sanatsujāta lehrt, dass Begierde (kāma) eine verblendende Macht ist: Für die Wesen ist sie Finsternis ohne Licht, und wegen des Leids, das sie bringt, erscheint sie wie die Hölle. Wie Männer, vom Trank berauscht und im Geist verwirrt, beim Gehen plötzlich losrennen und auf eine Grube zustürzen, so eilen die vom Begehren Getriebenen zu den Sinnesobjekten, halten sie für Glück—und stürzen doch ins Unheil.
