Drupada’s Counsel on Conciliation and Alliance Mobilization

अनुवर्त्स्यति तं चापि धृतराष्ट्र: सुतप्रिय: । भीष्मद्रोणौ च कार्पण्यान्मौख्याद्‌ राधेयसौबलौ,(सात्यकिकी बात सुनकर) द्रपदने कहा--महाबाहो! तुम्हारा कहना ठीक है। इसमें संदेह नहीं कि ऐसा ही होगा; क्योंकि दुर्योधन मधुर व्यवहारसे राज्य नहीं देगा। अपने उस पुत्रके प्रति आसक्त रहनेवाले धृतराष्ट्र भी उसीका अनुसरण करेंगे। भीष्म और द्रोणाचार्य दीनतावश तथा कर्ण और शकुनि मूर्खतावश दुर्योधनका साथ देंगे

anuvartsyati taṃ cāpi dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sutapriyaḥ | bhīṣmadroṇau ca kārpaṇyān maukhyād rādheyasaubalau ||

Drupada sagte: „Auch Dhṛtarāṣṭra wird aus Liebe zu seinem Sohn ihm folgen. Bhīṣma und Droṇa werden aus beklagenswerter Schwäche und Ohnmacht, und Karṇa und Śakuni aus Torheit ebenfalls auf Duryodhanas Seite stehen.“

The verse highlights how personal attachment (sutapriya), moral frailty (kārpaṇya), and foolish judgment (maukhya) can override discernment and bind even respected elders and heroes to an unrighteous leader, thereby accelerating collective downfall.

In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war deliberations, Drupada predicts the alignment of key Kuru figures: Dhṛtarāṣṭra will follow Duryodhana out of paternal attachment; Bhīṣma and Droṇa will remain with him due to helplessness/compassionate weakness; and Karṇa and Śakuni will support him out of misguided thinking—foreshadowing the consolidation of the Kaurava side.
