उद्योगपर्व — अध्याय 33: धृतराष्ट्र-विदुर संवादः (विदुरनीतिः)
दृश्यन्ते हि महात्मानो बध्यमाना: स्वकर्मभि: । इन्द्रियाणामनीशत्वाद् राजानो राज्यवि श्रमै:,इन्द्रियोंपर अधिकार न होनेके कारण बड़े-बड़े साधु भी अपने कर्मोंसे तथा राजालोग राज्यके भोग-विलासोंसे बँधे रहते हैं
dṛśyante hi mahātmāno badhyamānāḥ svakarmabhiḥ | indriyāṇām anīśatvād rājāno rājyaviśramaiḥ ||
Denn wir sehen ja: Selbst großgesinnte Männer werden durch die Folgen ihres eigenen Tuns gebunden; und Könige, denen die Herrschaft über die Sinne fehlt, werden von den Genüssen und Ausschweifungen der Königswürde festgehalten.
विदुर उवाच
Without mastery over the senses, even the noble become trapped—by their own actions and their consequences; and rulers in particular are ensnared by the comforts and temptations that come with power. The ethical thrust is indriya-nigraha (sense-control) as a prerequisite for dharmic action and freedom from bondage.
Vidura is delivering moral counsel (nīti) in the Udyoga Parva, warning about the dangers of uncontrolled senses and the binding nature of karma—especially for kings whose position offers abundant opportunities for indulgence.
