Udyoga Parva 21 — Bhīṣma’s Conciliatory Counsel, Karṇa’s Rebuttal, and Dhṛtarāṣṭra Sends Sañjaya (भीष्म-कर्ण-विवादः; संजय-प्रेषणम्)
भीष्मे ब्रुवति तद् वाक्य धृष्टमाक्षिप्य मन्युना । दुर्योधनं समालोक्य कर्णो वचनमब्रवीत्,भीष्मजी इस प्रकार कह ही रहे थे कि कर्णने दुर्योधनकी ओर देखकर क्रोधसे धृष्टतापूर्वक आक्षेप करते हुए (भीष्मजीके कथनकी अवहेलना करके) यह बात कही --[
bhīṣme bruvati tad vākyaṃ dhṛṣṭam ākṣipya manyunā | duryodhanaṃ samālokya karṇo vacanam abravīt ||
Während Bhīṣma jene Worte noch sprach, unterbrach Karṇa—vom Zorn getroffen—kühn mit einer scharfen Erwiderung. Er blickte zu Duryodhana und sprach in einer Weise, die Bhīṣmas Mahnung missachtete, ein Zeichen dafür, dass er die Selbstbeherrschung willentlich abstreifte und die Konfrontation suchte.
