Amba’s Disclosure of Prior Choice (Śālva) and Appeal to Bhīṣma — Chapter 171
देवव्रतत्वं विज्ञाप्य पृथिवीं सर्वराजसु । नैव हन्यां स्त्रियं जातु न स्त्रीपूर्व कदाचन
devavratatvaṁ vijñāpya pṛthivīṁ sarvarājasu | naiva hanyāṁ striyaṁ jātu na strīpūrvaṁ kadācana ||
Bhīṣma erklärt: „Nachdem ich unter allen Königen der Erde meine Identität und meinen Ruf als Devavrata, den durch ein Gelübde Gebundenen, kundgetan habe, kann ich niemals eine Frau töten—und unter keinen Umständen einen Mann, der einst eine Frau war.“ Damit zeichnet er sein Handeln im Krieg als durch ein öffentlich bekräftigtes ethisches Gelübde begrenzt und stellt persönliche Ehre und Dharma über taktischen Vorteil.
