Strī Parva 1: Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Lament and Saṃjaya’s Consolation
सृञ्जये पुत्रशोकार्ते यदूचु्मुनय: पुरा । “नृपश्रेष्ठ राजन! आपने बड़े-बूढ़ोंके मुखसे वे वेदोंके सिद्धान्त
Sṛñjaye putraśokārte yad ūcur munayaḥ purā.
Vaiśaṃpāyana sprach: „O König, du hast aus dem Mund der Ältesten die fest begründeten Lehren der Veden und die vielfältigen Unterweisungen der Śāstras vernommen — eben jene Tröstungen, die in alter Zeit die Weisen dem König Sṛñjaya zusprachen, als ihn der Schmerz um seinen Sohn quälte. Darum lege deinen Kummer ab.“
वैशमग्पायन उवाच
Grief should be restrained through remembered wisdom: the established teachings of the Vedas and śāstras, as transmitted by elders and sages, are presented as a remedy for overwhelming sorrow.
Vaiśaṃpāyana reminds the listener-king that earlier sages once consoled King Sṛñjaya when he mourned his son; invoking that precedent, he urges the present king to give up lamentation.
