anugrāhyā vayam nūnaṁ bhavatām iti me matiḥ | yad evaṁ guṇasampannān asmān brūtha vimatsarāḥ ||
The verse highlights ethical speech rooted in vimatsaratā (freedom from envy) and the humility of attributing honor and recognition to the listener’s kindness (anugraha), not to one’s own merit.
Vaiśampāyana acknowledges the interlocutors’ gracious, non-envious manner of addressing him and his group as virtuous, interpreting their respectful words as an act of favor and goodwill.
