अध्याय ३५१ — उञ्छवृत्ति-व्रतसिद्धेः मानुषस्य परमगतिः

Sūrya–Nāga Dialogue on the Perfected Gleaner-Ascetic

धर्माणां विविधानां च कर्ता ज्ञानकरस्तथा | भविष्यसि तपोयुक्तो न च रागाद्‌ विमोक्ष्यसे,“तुम नाना प्रकारके धर्मोंके प्रवर्तक, ज्ञानदाता और तपस्वी होओगे, परंतु रागसे सर्वथा मुक्त नहीं रहोगे

dharmāṇāṁ vividhānāṁ ca kartā jñānakaras tathā | bhaviṣyasi tapoyukto na ca rāgād vimokṣyase ||

Vaiśampāyana sprach: „Du wirst zum Begründer vieler Arten von Dharma werden und auch zum Spender von Wissen. Mit Askese (tapas) ausgestattet wirst du wie ein Asket leben; doch von Anhaftung (rāga) wirst du nicht völlig befreit sein.“

Ethical authority and spiritual practice can coexist with residual attachment: one may teach and establish many forms of dharma and possess tapas and knowledge, yet still fall short of complete inner freedom if rāga (clinging/affection/passion) remains.
