Śvetadvīpa-varṇana and Śāstra-pravartana (Śānti Parva 322)

भीष्म उवाच आत्मनानर्थयुक्तेन पापे निविशते मन: । स कर्म कलुषं कृत्वा क्लेशे महति धीयते,भीष्मजीने कहा--राजन्‌! जब बुद्धि काम-क्रोध आदि अनर्थोंसे युक्त हो जाती है, तब उससे प्रेरित हुए मनुष्यका मन पापमें प्रवृत्त होने लगता है। फिर वह मनुष्य दोषयुक्त कर्म करके महान्‌ क्लेशमें पड़ जाता है

bhīṣma uvāca ātmānānarthayuktena pāpe niviśate manaḥ | sa karma kaluṣaṃ kṛtvā kleśe mahati dhīyate ||

Bhīṣma sprach: „Wenn das innere Selbst eines Menschen sich mit schädlichen Regungen verstrickt, lässt sich der Geist in der Sünde nieder. Dann, nachdem er befleckte Taten vollbracht hat, stürzt jener Mensch in großes Leid.“
