अध्याय २८६ — पराशर-उपदेशः

Ethical Restraint, Mortality, and Karma

प्रियं हि हर्षजननं हर्ष उत्सेकवर्धन: । उत्सेको नरकायैव तस्मात्‌ तान्‌ संत्यजाम्यहम्‌,प्रिय वस्तु हर्षजनक होती है। हर्ष अभिमानको बढ़ाता है और अभिमान नरकमें ही डुबानेवाला है। इसलिये मैं इन तीनोंका त्याग करता हूँ

priyaṃ hi harṣajananaṃ harṣa utsekavardhanaḥ | utseko narakāyaiva tasmāt tān saṃtyajāmy aham ||

Das Liebe erzeugt Freude; die Freude wiederum nährt die Selbstüberhebung. Und Selbstüberhebung führt nur zur Hölle. Darum entsage ich diesen dreien: der Anhaftung an das Liebe, der Freude, die daraus entsteht, und dem Stolz, der ihr folgt.

The verse warns of a moral chain: attachment to what is pleasing gives rise to joy; joy can inflate pride; pride becomes spiritually ruinous. Hence one should renounce the sequence—clinging to the dear object, the intoxicating delight, and the resulting arrogance.
