Kapila–Cow Dialogue: Authority of Householder and Renunciant Dharmas
अदृश्यमानो रक्षोभिर्जलमध्ये वर्देस्तथा । अब्रूवंश्व पिशाचास्तं नैवं त्वं वक्तुमहसि
adṛśyamānā rakṣobhir jalāmadhye vṛdeḥ tathā | abruvaṃś ca piśācās taṃ naivaṃ tvaṃ vaktum arhasi ||
Bhīṣma sprach: Als der Weise Jājali, der in einer wasserreichen Gegend lebte und den Rākṣasas unsichtbar blieb, so sprach, da erwiderten ihm unsichtbare Piśācas: „Weiser, so solltest du nicht reden.“
भीष्म उवाच
The verse frames a moral check on speech: even an ascetic’s words are subject to dharmic scrutiny, and one should not speak in a manner deemed improper or harmful; restraint and right speech are implied as ethical duties.
Sage Jājali, living in a watery region while remaining unseen to rākṣasas, says something (from the prior context). In response, unseen piśācas address him and admonish him, telling him that he should not speak in that way.
