Kapila–Cow Dialogue: Authority of Householder and Renunciant Dharmas
जातफपफक्षांश्व॒ सो5पश्यदुड्डीनान् पुनरागतान् | सायं सायं द्विजान् विप्रो न चाकम्पत जाजलि:
jātapakṣāṃś ca so 'paśyad uḍḍīnān punar āgatān | sāyaṃ sāyaṃ dvijān vipro na cākampata jājaliḥ ||
Bhīṣma sagte: Als die Jungvögel Flügel bekommen hatten, sah er, wie sie ausflogen und wiederkehrten. Abend für Abend beobachtete der Brahmane Jājali ihr Kommen und Gehen, doch er rührte sich nicht—unerschütterlich in seinem asketischen Entschluss und in der Selbstzucht.
भीष्म उवाच
Steadfast self-restraint: even while witnessing daily movement and change around him, the ascetic maintains unwavering composure, suggesting that true tapas is inner stability rather than outward display.
The young birds, now winged, fly out during the day and return each evening. Jājali observes this repeated pattern but remains motionless, emphasizing his disciplined austerity.
