The Earlier Ideal Conduct of a Brahmana
River-of-Saṃsāra Metaphor
Bhīṣma emphasizes the vastness of ancient history and lineages: even famed groups like the Daityas and Dānavas are not exhaustive, and many earlier, more ancient beings and generations precede the present discussion—encouraging humility and a long-view approach in dharma deliberations.
In the course of instruction in the Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma is enumerating or referring to classes of beings and earlier generations, noting that the Daityas and Dānavas were not included with “these,” and that many other, older groups existed before them.
