मृत्यु-काल-प्रबोधनम् (Instruction on Mortality, Time, and Truth) — Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva 169
जघान गौतमो राजन् यथा दस्युगणास्तथा । हिंसापटर्घणाहीन: सदा प्राणिवधे रत:,उसका नाम गौतम था। उसने बाण चलाकर लक्ष्य बेधनेका वहाँ बड़े यत्नके साथ अभ्यास किया। राजन! गौतम भी दस्युओंकी तरह प्रतिदिन जंगलमें सब ओर घूम-फिरकर हंसोंका शिकार करने लगा। वह हिंसामें बड़ा प्रवीण था। उसमें दया नहीं थी। वह सदा प्राणियोंको मारनेकी ही ताकमें लगा रहता था
jaghāna gautamo rājan yathā dasyugaṇās tathā | hiṁsāpaṭarghaṇāhīnaḥ sadā prāṇivadhē rataḥ ||
Bhīṣma sprach: „O König, Gautama tötete Lebewesen wie Räuberbanden es tun. Ohne jede Zügelung gegenüber der Gewalt war er stets auf das Schlachten der Geschöpfe aus.“
