Educational Q&A

Bhīṣma links ethical repair (niṣkṛti, expiation) with the immediate orientation toward mokṣa: the most universal remedy for wrongdoing is to turn one’s life promptly toward liberation—through inner restraint, truthfulness, and detachment—rather than relying only on external rites.

In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma after the war. Here he states a principle about expiation: a broadly applicable atonement is the immediate adoption of a mokṣa-directed path, implying that moral purification is completed by sincere inner transformation.
