Daṇḍotpatti-kathana (Origin and Function of Daṇḍa) — वसुहोम–मान्धातृ संवाद

नीलोत्पलदलश्यामश्नतुर्वष्ट श्वतुर्भुज: । अष्टपान्नैकनयन: शंकुकर्णोर्ध्वरीमवान्‌

nīlotpaladalaśyāmaś caturdaṃṣṭraś caturbhujaḥ | aṣṭapān naikanayanaḥ śaṅkukarṇordhvaromavān ||

Bhishma sprach: „Der Glanz seines Leibes ist dunkel wie das Blatt des blauen Lotos. Er hat vier Hauer und vier Arme; acht Füße und viele Augen. Seine Ohren sind wie Pflöcke, und die Haare seines Körpers stehen nach oben.“ Diese Schilderung hebt eine ehrfurchtgebietende, furchterregende Gestalt hervor—um dem Hörer die überwältigende Macht und den Schrecken vor Augen zu führen, die im moralischen Kosmos des Epos mit gewaltigen Kräften einhergehen können.
