शंकितस्त्वमहं भीत: परच्छिद्रानुदर्शिन: । अस्निग्धाश्वैव दुस्तोषा: कर्म चैतद् बहुच्छलम्,“आप मुझपर संदेह करेंगे और मैं आपसे डरता रहूँगा, इधर पराये दोष दूँढनेवाले आपके भूत्यलोग मौजूद ही हैं। इनका मुझपर तनिक भी स्नेह नहीं है तथा इन्हें संतुष्ट रखना भी मेरे लिये अत्यन्त कठिन है। साथ ही यह मन्त्रीका कर्म भी अनेक प्रकारके छल- कपटसे भरा हुआ है
śaṅkitas tv ahaṃ bhītaḥ paracchidra-anudarśinaḥ | asnigdhāś caiva duṣṭoṣāḥ karma caitad bahu-chalam ||
Bhishma sprach: „Ich bin in Sorge und fürchte, du könntest mich verdächtigen. Zudem sind deine Diener stets darauf bedacht, die Fehler anderer aufzuspüren; sie hegen keinerlei Zuneigung zu mir, und es ist für mich überaus schwer, sie zufriedenzustellen. Und auch das Amt eines Ministers ist voller mancherlei Täuschung und List.“
