Restraint of wrath in the royal assembly

ahaṃ karte iti vidura mā ca maṃsthā mā no nityaṃ paruṣāṇīha vocaḥ | na tvāṃ pṛcchāmi vidura yaddhitaṃ me svasti kṣattar mā titikṣūn kṣiṇu tvam ||

(Duryodhana)
(Vidura)

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how ego and hostility make a person reject beneficial counsel: Duryodhana refuses to hear what is ‘hita’ (good for him) and instead attacks Vidura’s speech, illustrating the ethical danger of pride and harsh words in governance.

In the royal assembly context, Vidura has been offering admonition, but Duryodhana, angered and defensive, dismisses him, tells him not to keep speaking harshly, declares he does not want advice for his welfare, and effectively sends him away.
