Cruel speech and public humiliation are adharma that return as inner torment: the verse frames Karna’s suffering as moral consequence—remorse arising from having reviled the Pāṇḍavas and spoken harshly to Draupadī in the assembly.
Sañjaya, reporting to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, foretells that Karna will now experience intense regret for his earlier conduct in the sabhā—specifically, the harsh words directed at Draupadī while disparaging the Pāṇḍavas—implying that the unfolding war is forcing moral reckoning.
