Dhṛṣṭadyumna’s advance toward Droṇa and the Sātyaki–Karṇa confrontation

Educational Q&A

The verse contrasts ritual purity and generosity with the moral discomfort caused by an improper killing: even in war, dharma-sensitive observers may refuse to celebrate a death that appears ethically compromised, especially when the slain is depicted as restrained and ascetic-like.

Sañjaya reports that the warriors did not rejoice at Bhūriśravas’s killing. He is portrayed as a renowned sacrificer and lavish donor, sitting quietly like a forest sage, and therefore his death is presented as something that did not elicit approval from those present.
