Arjuna and Ulūpī: Explanation of Śānti and the Maṇipūra Resolution
इति मत्वा तदात्मान प्रत्यादिष्टं सम मागध: । तथ्यमित्यभिगम्यैनं प्राउजलि: प्रत्यपूजयत्
iti matvā tadātmānaṃ pratyādiṣṭaṃ sa māgadhaḥ | tathyam ity abhigamyainaṃ prāñjaliḥ pratyapūjayat ||
Da er erkannte, dass sein Leben tatsächlich verschont und er förmlich entlassen worden war, trat der Mann aus Magadha zu Arjuna. Mit gefalteten Händen in Ehrfurcht erwies er ihm respektvoll die Ehre.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights ethical restraint in power: when a warrior chooses to spare and formally release an opponent, that act can transform hostility into respect. Mercy aligned with dharma becomes a moral authority that compels acknowledgment even from adversaries.
After hearing Arjuna’s words and realizing he has been spared and dismissed, the Magadhan approaches Arjuna, joins his palms, and offers respectful honor—indicating acceptance of Arjuna’s decision and the truth of his safety.
