Indra–Mataṅga Saṃvāda: On the rarity and responsibilities of Brāhmaṇya (इन्द्र-मतङ्ग संवादः)
भवान् विशिष्टो बुद्ध्या च प्रज्ञया तपसा तथा । तस्माद् भवन्तं पृच्छामि धर्म धर्मभूतां वर । नान्यस्त्वदन्यो लोकेषु प्रष्टव्यो5स्ति नराधिप
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca | bhavān viśiṣṭo buddhyā ca prajñayā tapasā tathā | tasmād bhavantaṃ pṛcchāmi dharmaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ vara | nānyas tvadanyo lokeṣu praṣṭavyo 'sti narādhipa ||
Yudhiṣṭhira sprach: „Du bist ausgezeichnet durch Verstand, Weisheit und asketische Zucht. Darum frage ich dich nach dem Dharma, o Bester unter den Wahrern der Rechtschaffenheit. In allen Welten gibt es keinen anderen wie dich, o König, der zu befragen wäre.“
युधिछिर उवाच
Dharma should be learned through humble inquiry from a truly qualified authority—one proven by discernment (buddhi), wisdom (prajñā), and disciplined conduct (tapas).
Yudhiṣṭhira respectfully acknowledges the addressee’s exceptional moral and intellectual stature and, on that basis, requests instruction on dharma, declaring that no one else is as worthy to be questioned.
