Educational Q&A

Charity bears the highest merit when given with discernment to a truly virtuous and learned Brahmin; the recipient’s qualities amplify the spiritual fruit, even to the extent of benefiting the donor’s whole lineage.

In the Anushasana Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhishma is advising Yudhishthira about dana (gift-giving), stressing that gifts offered to a qualified, morally upright Brahmin yield immense results and can redeem the donor’s family line.
