प्रजापति दक्ष जब यज्ञ कर रहे थे, उस समय उनका यज्ञ आरम्भ होनेपर कुपित हुए भगवान्‌ शंकरने निर्भय होकर उनके यज्ञको अपने बाणोंसे बींध डाला और धनुषसे बाण छोड़कर गम्भीर स्वरमें सिंहनाद किया

prajāpati dakṣaḥ yadā yajñaṃ karoti sma, tadā tasya yajñasya ārambhe kupitaḥ bhagavān śaṅkaraḥ nirbhayaḥ san tasya yajñaṃ svabāṇaiḥ viddhvā, dhanuṣā bāṇān visṛjya gambhīra-svareṇa siṃhanādaṃ cakāra.

Vāyu sprach: Als Prajāpati Dakṣa ein Opfer darbrachte, da stand der Herr Śaṅkara, vom Zorn ergriffen, gleich zu Beginn des Ritus furchtlos da. Er durchbohrte das Opfer mit seinen Pfeilen, schoss Geschosse von seinem Bogen und stieß mit tiefer Stimme ein löwengleiches Brüllen aus — ein Zeichen für den Zusammenbruch eines Rituals, das zur Kränkung göttlicher Ordnung und gebührender Ehrfurcht geworden war.
